This is a compilation of statistics based on fallen officers posted on
this web site. It is my way of showing you in simplest form the statistics
of officers that died in 2008 and were posted on
www.copadorer.com Every one should
find it informative. Feel free to share it with your affiliated agencies
and departments. God Bless all of our fallen officers and in our hearts
they will remain.
CAUSE OF DEATH
Shootings-
8 officers died during domestic violence calls
(cut in half compared to 2007)
8 officers were killed directing traffic
2 officers were shot by a co-worker
1 officer was shot by their own gun
3 officers were shot for retaliation
1 officer was shot during a robbery
41 officers in total died by gunfire
Motor Vehicle-
67 officers died while in their vehicle in an accident
7 officers died when their car hit a tree
9 officers were killed by semi drivers
7 officers were killed by drunk drivers
3 officers were hit by a co-worker
9 officers died in motorcycle accidents (doubled
from 2007)
67 officers in total died from motor vehicle accidents
Heart Attack-
5 officers died of heart attacks during training
Other-
2 officers died in a bombing at a bank
1 officer died drowning
2 officers died from disease or illness
4 officers died in a helicopter crash
1 officer died during a boxing match
1 officer died of chemical
poisoning
1 officer was raped and stabbed
1 officer was killed in a train
accident
1 officer was electrocuted
1 officer died of a brain
rupture
1 officer died in a fist fight
with a fellow officer
1 officer died from injuries
being kicked in the neck

LENGTH OF TIME ON THE JOB
2 years on average - 11 officers died within their 2nd year on duty
Shortest Time on Job: 3 months
Longest Time on Job: 44 years - Police officer that got in a fight with
fellow officer outside a bar.
5 years or under on the job - 39 officers
6 to 10 years on the job - 31 officers
11 to 15 years on the job - 22 officers
16 to 20 years on the job - 16 officers
21 to 25 years on the job - 6 officers (dropped
dramatically from 2007)
26 to 30 years on the job - 6 officers
31 plus years on the job - 1 officer

The amount of fallen officers age 21 - 25
dropped three fold compared to 2007-YES!!!

Youngest: 22
Oldest: 74 year old Reserve Officer in Louisiana
Under Age 25: 14 officers
Age 26 to 30: 21 officers
Age 31 to 35: 21 officers (dropped in half from
2007)
Age 36 to 40: 27 officers
Age 41 to 45: 17 officers
Age 46 to 50: 11 officers
Age 51 to 60: 17 officers
Age 61 to 65: 2 officers
Over 65: 1 officer
GENDER OF LOST OFFICERS
Female: 15
Male: 125

8 Officers on the web site died off the line of duty.
*This total will always be greater then the number of national statistics
of officers deaths in 2008 -
some of the names listed on the web site were retired or disabled officers
that did not die in the Line of Duty.

A set of twins lost a father
Detective with Border Control in Florida had 5 grandchildren

More women were killed this year on the job than
any other year.
One officer was a month away from retirement
One officer was killed outside
their home.
One officer was killed by her
son along with her two daughters
Two officers who were partners
were killed within 6 months of each other
Only two officers were listed
from other countries in 2008
Eight officers have family members also on the job.
September was the worst month for deaths - 21
